FAMILY NEWS
Emmanuel--God with us--Even in February!
It seems like we mostly hear about “Emmanuel” around Christmas time. We have just passed through a difficult season, and yet my overall impression of this time is--"God was/is with us.” After only a few weeks on hospice, my (Vicki's) dad passed away on February 12th. His last few days on earth were spent with family crowded all around his bed, holding his hands as we sang LOTS of songs, shared memories and laughter, and thanked him for a life well-lived. God’s presence was very near and has continued to sustain us as we try to adjust to our “new normal”. I have parents that loved one another for almost 65 years. Mom continues to give and serve, even in her grief. We are all so thankful for dad’s life and the foundation it gave us. Mostly, we are grateful that we will see him again and that he is now free and whole in the presence of his Savior! We grieve with hope. We had a burial service with family present and we hope to have a Celebration of Life service in the late spring or summer, depending on Covid guidelines.
We mourn the loss of Dad even as we anticipate the arrival of our new grandson! In late May, Steve and Kendra are expecting a little brother for Phoebe and Rhea! Kendra is having a good pregnancy and is already on maternity leave from her job as a surgical nurse. Steve’s home-based ice cream company is thriving and growing!
Cody continues to work for Providence Hospital as a hospice nurse. We always knew he was compassionate and good at his job, now we have experienced it firsthand. Cody came on the day that his grandpa took a turn for the worse and stayed with us for the next 6 days, through the dying process and for a few days afterward, offering his expertise and delivering it with love and guidance.
Kyle and Olga have settled into pursuing their PhD degrees in Aberdeen, Scotland. So they are a mere few hours from Kendra and Steve in Stirling! Kyle and Olga are enjoying their studies and their little flat by the sea. They are still involved in ministry in Greece, via the internet, hoping to go back and teach there after finishing their degrees. We are looking forward to their visit here in early summer!
William continues to work as a cook at the Edgefield McMenamin’s nearby, and has also recently become a personal support worker for Ellie! This means that among other duties, he helps her with her online school classes, giving Scott and me a break from that duty that came to us over a year ago, thanks to Covid! William also bought a condo last Fall with his hard-earned money, and is enjoying home ownership. I cannot tell you what a balm it was to have Cody and Will around during Dad’s passing--it was truly a gift.
Ellie is doing great and continues to be a sunny personality, even during her teenage years! Most of the time she does pretty well with her online school, but I know she will love being back in the classroom and seeing her friends face to face! (that may happen at the end of this month- with all of the regulations and precautions in place)
In January, a dear friend (who is more like family) joined our household! I have known Kelly Klimp since I was 18 (don’t do the math)! She has been a ray of sunshine and a wonderful addition to our home! She loves and serves well and has been such a blessing to us all! Since my parents have always thought of her as another daughter, her presence has been a timely blessing to Mom.
Through every season, God has been faithful to our family. Thank you to all of you who have loved us well, prayed for us during the challenging times, and rejoiced with us for every good and perfect blessing!
Because of YOU, we are able to educate others about sex trafficking, help foster a collaborative spirit amongst churches in an at-risk community, disciple others who will disciple others, and take the Gospel to the nations! Thank you for allowing God to use your prayers and financial investments to help this happen!
